Welcome to the NHS : An Induction for Overseas Doctors is a 3-day, CPD accredited, communications course to help prepare overseas doctors for work in the NHS.
The limitations of the IELTS, the English language test required for GMC registration and visa purposes, are well documented. In 2014 the GMC observed that, despite the requisite score, overseas doctors experience ‘difficulties with subtleties of language and dialect […], misunderstandings of the nuances of non-verbal communication and social and behavioural norms’. These inadequacies have serious knock-on effects for the treatment and care of patients, not to mention possible issues around patient safety, governance and safeguarding. For overseas doctors there are the additional issues of integrating into the local community, avoiding possible isolation and making a home in the UK, the success of which ultimately benefits NHS Trusts in terms of staff retention and a positive patient experience.
