Ros Wright
Clinical Communications Specialist, Teacher Trainer & Materials Writer

Hi, my name's Ros.

I'm a Clinical Communications Specialist, helping healthcare professionals achieve success    in English, and helping language trainers improve their teaching of clinical communications skills.

Where it all began
My work with healthcare professionals began back in 1998, and at that time there were very few specific materials or guidelines to fall back on.

I didn't have a medical background, but I quickly came to realise was that teaching clinical communications skills was not about having an in-depth knowledge of medical terminology or even conditions and procedures, it was about what we now refer to in ELT as ‘soft skills’.

It was about understanding the patient-centred approach to care (considering the patient as a whole as opposed to a set of symptoms to be cured) and focusing on developing skills to ensure healthcare professionals are able to convey that approach in English.

Where it led
Since then  I have spent many years training healthcare professionals, both in France and the UK.

I gained  an MA in Applied Linguistics and  ELT Materials Development which led to my writing several Medical English   coursebooks, including Good Practice: Communication Skills in English for the Medical Practitioner . Shortlisted for a British Council ELTon in 2008, it later won the inaugural BESIG-David Riley Award for Innovation in ESP. More importantly (for me), it earned the endorsement of Dr Jonathan Silverman, world-renowned expert in clinical communications skills and  co-author of  the
Calgary-Cambridge Observation Guide, THE   gold standard for clinical communications skills training in medical faculties the world over.   More recently I learnt the coursebook is being  recommended to native-speaker GP trainees  in the UK as a course to help  develop their clinical communication skills.

During this time I also   took on the role of  General Secretary of  EALTHY , the   only teaching association dedicated to  English for healthcare.

Where I am now
Today,  I am contracted by a specialist recruitment agency in London to provide a   CPD-accredited  communications and cultural  integration course, specifically designed to support  overseas clinicians and nursing staff acclimatise  to living and working in the UK.

I am a   teacher trainer,   helping educators move into  the field of English for  healthcare.   I continue to write course materials for healthcare professionals for both traditional publishers and online providers. And I have also  just completed two terms as a Trustee of IATEFL, the second largest English language teaching association    in the world.
